Addition and Remodeling
Rockville, Maryland
WINNER!

2000 Finest for Family Living Award and 2000 Custom Builder Award
for Addition and Remodeling

The first time we talked to the owners of this house about the possibility of adding to and remodeling their typical subdivision home, they presented us with an itemized list that detailed all of their dreams for their home. They had two main goals. The first was an enlarged kitchen and eating space that was open to both the family room and the dining room. The other was a new master suite with an up to date bathroom and ample closet space.

As they were soon to be empty nesters, their master suite and entertaining spaces were of primary importance. They wanted informal open spaces that flowed together.

But don't take our word for it, see what the owners had to say...

The foyer was widened and opened to the living room using columns and low walls, providing spaces that are brighter and more open.

The cozy dining room was too small for large family gatherings. Opening the dining room to the kitchen allows seating in both areas, and serving from the kitchen island.

To open the family room to the rest of the first floor the entry and built-ins were expanded and moved.

The original kitchen and breakfast areas were cramped and dark. The new breakfast room provides an open eating area with a fireplace that adds warmth and dimension to the room as an entertaining space and can be seen from the kitchen and dining room.

The owners not only enjoy cooking, but also enjoy cooking together. The existing kitchen was tiny and windowless. They have contemporary taste and the combination of natural maple slab doors with sleek hardware for the cabinets and stainless steel appliances were the perfect combination to create the feeling that they were looking for. The multilevel island with two complimentary granites was created both for visual drama and practicality. As the husband is a foot taller than the wife, he wanted a section of the counter to be a higher workspace.

The existing master suite consisted of multiple cramped and dark spaces. The old master bathroom was disjointed and you had to walk through it to get to the bedroom and closet from the sitting room. The new bathroom gives each owner a separate vanity, and has a luxurious shower for two with multiple massage jets and a bench.

The bedroom is bright and airy with plenty of space and a volume ceiling.

The exterior of the house was refurbished with new front door, roof, landscaping, walkways, railing, lighting, siding, shutters, and replacement windows. Low maintenance materials were used on the exterior. New flagstone patios were installed on both levels of the backyard and the retaining wall in the rear was redesigned and replaced.
